How to care for Louis Vuitton coated canvas

Comment entretenir la toile enduite Louis Vuitton

We often hear that Louis Vuitton's coated canvas is "indestructible". Honestly, it's not completely untrue: it's incredibly resistant. But to say it's immortal... not at all. All too often, I still see bags that sag, crack or smell musty. And there's nothing elegant about that.

So if, like me, you want your bag to keep its shine for years to come (and why not pass it on to your children one day?), you need a minimum of maintenance. Not complicated, not headache-inducing, but regular.

What exactly is coated canvas?

Many people think it's leather. Let me reassure you: it's not. Coated canvas is actually a fabric (often cotton) coated with a resin that makes it waterproof and resistant. It's what makes your Speedy or Neverfull light, strong and instantly recognizable.

But tough doesn't mean invincible. Canvas can dry out, warp, crack, or even... absorb odors (I swear I've seen a bag that smelled of cold tobacco, a horror).

3 mistakes to avoid

  1. Rubbing with a magic sponge
This one... I think it's the worst. I've seen people "save" their bags with a magic sponge. The result? The canvas becomes dull, rough and, above all, porous. In short, the magic sponge bag is in the garbage can.

  2. Using Nivea cream, make-up remover or body cream
I still see this all too often... I don't know who came up with the idea, but no, these products aren't made for canvas (or even leather, for that matter). At the time, it may give the impression that the material is shinier or more "nourished", but in reality it clogs pores, dries it out over the long term, and ends up damaging your bag instead of protecting it.

  3. Forgetting it in a closet for months without ventilation
This is the "classic" mistake. The bag ends up limp and musty, and when you take it out you wonder if it's really the same one you bought.

My little routine with Luxury Care

1. Gentle cleansing

I always use CLEANER. It's gentle, natural and works just as well on canvas as leather. I apply with a microfiber cloth or with my application glove (personally, I find it more practical). Use small circular movements, nothing violent, and you're on your way to a shiny canvas.

👉 Once you've finished cleaning, be sure to remove any excess product with a clean cloth: the coated canvas doesn't absorb it, so it must be removed to avoid any unwanted traces or shine.

2. Moisturize to avoid drying out

Even if your bag is mainly made of coated canvas, it often has natural cowhide leather finishes: handles, corners, edges... And it's these areas that require regular moisturizing (every 2-3 months).

To prevent the leather from drying out, darkening or cracking, apply a thin layer of our LEATHER CARE to the leather parts. This care product nourishes, protects and restores suppleness and shine to cowhide, while respecting its natural patina.

For coated canvas, occasional moisturizing (once a year) is all that's needed. This preserves its suppleness and prevents it from becoming stiff or dull over time, without overloading the material.

3. Protect against moisture

Finally, to prevent moisture or splashes from soaking into the material (especially on older or vintage bags), apply a light veil of our WATERPROOFER. It acts as an invisible shield without altering the texture or appearance of the bag.

What about vintage bags?

Here, even more vigilance is required. I recovered a Speedy from the 90s: beautiful, but it had spent too much time locked up. To avoid this :

  • I air it often (especially not locked in a dustbag for 6 months),

  • I keep him away from sunlight and heating,

  • and I give it a complete routine every 3 to 6 months.

Result: a supple, shiny, crack-free canvas

A supple canvas that doesn't crack, and a bag that keeps its shape and shine. And above all: it ages well. Because a luxury bag is made to last.

That's why I'd never leave a Louis Vuitton abandoned with only... a damp cloth. That would be a waste.

If you want the complete routine I use, I've put all of it here
